The Durrells season 1 DVD is one of the best new shows of 2016 starring Keeley Hawes, Josh O'Connor and Milo Parker.
Set in 1935 when the Englishwoman Louisa Durrell, whose life had fallen apart, decided to move from Bournemouth to the Greek island of Corfu. Her husband had died some years earlier and she has financial problems, when she suddenly announces that she and her four children will move to the island and a Homeric battle ensues as the family adapt to life on the island, especially when they discover that Corfu does not even have electricity at that time. But it is cheap, an earthly paradise and the Durrell family make the big step that will change their lives.
A warm, funny, feel-good series about a family's adventures on a gorgeous Greek island when they uproot from their English home in the hope of a better life. Based on Gerald Durrell's much-loved Corfu trilogy of novels.
The Durrells sees impoverished but sparky widow Louisa Durrell make the radical decision to seek out a new destiny for her family when her options in late 1930's England seem to be limited to struggling on or marrying a wealthy but dreary older man. Concerned that the lives of her four 'children', ranging in age from 11 to 21, are heading down the wrong track, she relocates her reluctant brood to a dilapidated house in the Greek sun.
This beautifully-shot series follows the family as they adjust to their new life, face a whole new set of challenges and meet new friends, rivals, lovers and animals.

I have read most of Gerald Durrell's books if this series is like the rest we are in for many laughs & some amazing animal facts. Surely GD is the forerunner of David Attenborough. One vivid memory is little Gerald disemboweling a dead turtle on the veranda, some older sisters have no sense of humour.
